Mr. Lyness

This past week a favorite Boone High School History teacher made his own history by having a facebook page created in his honor, flowers sent to his funeral by the Class of '88 (thanks Amy & John for coordinating) and news traveled far and wide this great man had closed his chapter here on earth to start a new one up above.

Mr. Lyness taught me and my younger brother and countless others for over 30 yrs in Boone. Boone was truly blessed to have this man as a teacher. His handwritting impecable and his 13 pg. FILL IN THE BLANK tests were nothing to take lightly. The questions if missed would keep showing up until everyone got it right or almost everyone. On the first day of class he told you to put your books away, get out your paper and pen/pencil and start taking notes, LOTS of notes. If you didn't take notes you were not going to pass his test because nothing he taught was in the textbook. I had him for Government and that year we learned all the Supreme Court Justices, how many electoral votes each state had, who were the Senators both Republican and Democrat and countless other pieces of history relating to our Government. I still remember his teachings 20 yrs. later. Mr. Lyness always wore a smile, got the senior girls coursages and made you dress up on coursage day to get it. He was truly an inspiration to many.

Here is an article a DM Register columnist wrote on the great, one and only Mr. Hal Lyness.
